An interesting thread. It is true that the top research museums are
selective about what they want. However, I would not advise all collectors
to abandon their purchased collections in favor of carefully counted and
identified bulk samples. Aesthetically or culturally motivated collectors
should look for museums that want shells for these values. For example, some
museums' chief business is education of the young, not research, and these
museums need beautiful shells.
This isn't an excuse to throw away locality information, of course. Keep
those labels!
