A good way to target live micros is to have a good-sized tub (e.g., 2
gallon bucket, large sturdy tupperware, etc.) Fill the tub about half
full of water. Pick up things that micros are likely to be living on
(rocks, algae, etc.) and vigorously shake them in the water in the
tub. Let the water settle a bit and then pour off most of the water.
If you correctly selected popular substrate, the bottom of the bucket
will have lots of small creatures crawling around.
