Hello All,
I am in the process of cataloging individual mining claim maps that
we have from the Bureau of Land Management. Some sample titles are:
Plat of the Samuel McMaster et. al. claim upon the Jacobson Oil
Springs Laramie County Mining District, Laramie County, Wyoming
Plat of the Green Mountain Boy claim upon the Green Mountain Boy
Lode, Platte Canon Mining District, Laramie County, Wyoming.
Plat of the Gold Blossom Mining claim upon the Gold Blossom Quartz
Lode, Bramel Mining District, Carbon County, Wyoming.
I would like to do a 651 (probably 651 4) Geographic Subject heading
for the Mining Districts, most of which are not in GNIS (I will turn
them in as part of my work for GNIS Phase II).
The subject headings that I would use for the above items are:
Jacobson Oil Springs (Wyo.) =x Maps.
Platte Canon Mining District (Wyo.) =x Maps
Bramel Mining District (Wyo.) =x Maps.
Since the oil springs are actually oil seeps (places where oil
producing rocks are near the surface), I feel a little odd about
calling it a MINING DISTRICT, since the oil was just scooped out of a
pond. Also, I have a feeling that the Laramie County usage for the
mining district is an error by the person who was filling in the
blanks on the title portion of the maps (at the time that this map
was done, Laramie County covered an area larger than some eastern
U.S. States, and referring to the entire County as a mining district
does not pin things down much). Any comments or suggestions on how to
proceed would be greatly appreciated.
