might you clarify your terms? What do you mean by geographic information
systems: would AtlasGIS be included in your definition, for example? Your
phrase "transition to GIS" might well imply libraries that are leaving paper
maps behind completely? Is that what you mean? Just a quibble, but that's the
mood I'm in...Thanks for any clarification you can provide...Alice H.

RE: Libraries using GIS
Ms. Rankin,
A survey on this topic was done of U.S. and Canadian libraries by
myself and Diana Rivera under the aegis of the Congress of Cartographic
Information Specialists Associations. Summaries of the results were sent
to the editors/etc. of publications of each participating organization as
well has having the information posted on MAPS-L. Recently, the summary
appeared in the ACSM BULLETIN. For copies of all the information call
Chris Baruth at the American Geog. Soc. Collection at the Univ. of Wisc. in
Milwaukee (1-800-558-8993) or write him on email ([log in to unmask]).
This includes names and addresses of respondents.
Hope that this helps in your project.

If this information is available, I hope you will post it to the list! It
would also be interesting to know which, if any, of these systems are
available over the Internet via Telnet, Gopher, &c.Thanks.

Re: Libraries using GIS
Although certainly not comprehensive, I would suggest that you contact Ms. Prue
Adler at the Association of Research Libraries in Washington for their list of
participating libraries in the ARL/GIS Project. This will give you a list of
approximately 60 research librarries in the United States and I am sure that
there are others that you will hear from.
