SATURDAY, 13 May TOUR DAY
9:00-5:00? Tours of the Britannia Shipyard Museum and the Gulf of
Georgia Cannery Museum, a walking tour of the historic fishing village of
Steveston, and a boat tour to the mouth of the Fraser to see the sea lions.
Details to be announced later.
NB: As we will not have the bus all day, it will not be possible to
take luggage on the field trip, and be dropped off at the Airport. If
you plan to check our of your room before leaving on the field trip, you
can arrange with the desk clerk to leave your luggage there.
PROGRAMME INFORMATION
ICEBREAKER RECEPTION
The Icebreaker Reception will be held at the home of Fran Woodward, 3794
West 24th Ave., Vancouver. Members are requested to form car pools for
the 10 minute drive.
PAPER SESSIONS
Wednesday morning sessions will be held in the Museum of Anthropology
Theatre Gallery. All subsequent sessions will be held in the Hennings
Physics Building, Room 201.
REGISTRATION
Registration will take place: in the main lobby of the Gage Complex from
3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 9; outside the Museum of Anthropology
Theatre Galler from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 10; outside Room
201, Hennings Physics Building, from 8:30-9:00 a.m. Thursday, May 11.
Mailing your Registration Form in advance and prepaying your fees will
expedite the process for everyone. Local bus information and detailed
city maps will be included in your Registration Kit.
VENDOR DISPLAYS
Vendor displays will be located in Rooms 302 and 304, Hennings Physics
Building.
REDISTRIBUTION
Redistribution of maps will take place in the Map Library throughout the
conference. The Map Library is located in the south wing of the Main
Library, just across the road from the Hennings Physics Building.
Delegates wishing to participate are responsible for bringing their maps
to the Library, and for taking any leftovers home with them, as well as
any maps selected in the redistribution.
EXHIBITION AT MOA
UBC's Museum of Anthropology is hosting the travelling exhibition ANOTHER
AMERICA: AN EXHIBITION OF NATIVE AMERICAN MAPS for the month of May in
honour of our conference. Delegates will have free admission to the
Museum to view this exhibition throughout the conference, including
Sunday, 14 May. Your conference badge is your pass.
BANQUET
The Banquet will be held at the University Golf Club, near the campus.
It will consist of a barbecue featuring both top sirloin steak and salmon
fillet. Accompanying these will be: fresh rolls, vegetables and dip in
sourdough, six seasonal salads, assorted relishes, chilled meat platter,
chilled salmon in filo pastry, baked potatoes, fresh fruit medley,
cheeses, coffee and tea. The evening will commence with a no-host bar,
and we hope to include an after dinner speaker, taped music and dancing.

REGISTRATION FORM.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
If there is sufficient interest, we will arrange for car pools to
transport us the short distance to a local beach for a volleyball game,
at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, or Thursday, May 11, in case of rain.
GENERAL INFORMATION
GETTING THERE
AIR: With the new Open Skies agreement, there will probably be more air
carriers flying into Vancouver. The quickest and easiest transportation
to the university is by taxi from the Airport to the Walter Gage
Residence Complex, 5959 Student Union Boulevard. The rate is approx.
$27.00 Cdn. Taxis can stop directly in front of the entrance to the Gage
registration centre.
ALTERNATE Transportation from the Airport to UBC for the more adventurous:
(1) The Airporter bus ($9 one way/$15 return) to the Chateau Granville
(1100 Granville St.), about 4 blocks past the Granville St. Bridge, cross
Granville St. & catch the No. 10 UBC city bus ($1.50 exact fare) to the
UBC Bus Loop at the corner of University Boulevard & East Mall. Walk
north (towards the mountains) past the buildings on your right. You will
see 3 tal buildings across the plaza - that is the Gage Res. Complex.
ANOTHER ALTERNATE for the very adventurous - take the city transit the
whole way, catching the No. 100 New Westminster bus from the Airport,
Departures Level 3, transfer at Granville & Hudson to No. 20 Victoria,
then transfer at Granville & Broadway to No. 10 UBC to the UBC Bus Loop.
The fare (exact change only) is $1.50 in off-peak hours, or $2.25 in peak
hours.
CAR: From the Airport, stay in the Vancouver lane, then stay in the
right/city centre lane crossing the bridge. Once you are on Granville
St., move to the left lane. Turn left either at 70th Ave., 49th Ave. or
41st Ave., all of which run into Marine Drive. Keep on Marine Drive
until 16th Ave. branches to the right. Move into the left lane on 16th
Ave. and turn left at the traffic light on Wesbrook. Go through 2 lights
on Wesbrook, then take the second turning left, then immediately turn
right at the entrance to Gage.
If you are driving NORTH on Highway 90 (from Highway I-5), take the
second turning (Downtown/Marine Drive West) to the right at the north end
of the Oak St. Bridge. Keep on Marine Drive until it curves around into
Granville St., then follow the directions given above.
If you are driving WEST on Highway 1, take the Grandview exit. Stay on
Grandview, which will change into 12th Ave., then 10th Ave., then
University Boulevard. Turn right at the traffic light at University &
Wesbrook Mall, then left at the second turning, then immediately right to
Gage.
PARKING
There is free parking adjacent to the Gage Residence Complex for those
staying there.
There is a parkade immediately west of Gage. The daily parking rate is
about $5.00.
ACCOMMODATION
A block of accommodation has been reserved at the Gage Residence Complex,
in the heart of the UBC Campus. The following options will be available:
single & twin rooms, shared washroom, $32 per person;
single room with phone & private washroom, $56 per room;
2-room suite with double bed, phoe & private washroom, $74 per suite;
triple-suite with TV, phone, kitchenette & private washroom, $95
per suite. (NB: These rates are in Canadian dollars.)

MEALS AND SHOPPING
The Student Union Building (SUB), located across the street south of the
Gage Complex, contains the Pacific Spirit cafeteria, a pub, and several
food outlets. The Gage Bistro, located inside the Gage Complex, will
also operate during the conference period. The nearby University Village
offers four restaurants and several food stores, along with a gas
station, pharmacy, and a bank. There is also a bank and several ATM's in
the Student Union Building.
WEATHER
The average temperature in May is 12 - 18 degrees Celsius / 54 - 64
degrees F. Bring a sweater, a light raincoat, and an umbrella.

Rooms have been reserved for meetings on Tuesday, May 9, from 9:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. PLEASE COMMUNICATE WITH TIM ROSS by APRIL 28 if you will
require a meeting room.
