                   CHAPTER ON CARTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS
      IN RULES FOR ARCHIVAL DESCRIPTION (RAD) and REGLES POUR LA
DESCRIPTION DES DOCUMENTS D'ARCHIVES (RDDA)
 
 
I am posting the following information on this list because I know
that many map librarians do not have access to this information
and/or are not aware of the development of rules for the
description of archival materials.  Information like this is
disseminated through archival literature to which map librarians
are not necessarily subscribing.

<<Rules for Archival Description>> (RAD) or <<Regles pour la
description des documents d'archives>> (RDDA) are to Canadian
archivists what AACR2R are to librarians and libraries in the
Anglo-American community.  All archival descriptions in Canada
(cataloguing of archival materials) will follow these rules in the
future.
 
RAD/RDDA are developed by working groups, chapter by chapter,
generally one for each medium, coordinated by the Planning
Committee on Descriptive Standards (PCDS) of the Bureau of Canadian
Archivists, the umbrella body representing the two professional
associations of archivists in Canada, the Association of Canadian
Archivists (ACA) and the Association des archivistes du Quebec
(AAQ).  RAD/RDDA generally follow the structure of AACR2 and are
compatible with it.  That is, records or descriptions produced by
either are supposed to be able to live happily together in the same
catalogue or in the same data base.  Most of the second part of
AACR2, Headings, Uniform Titles, and References is replicated in
RAD/RDDA as are the appendices.  This ensures that access points
for library produced cataloguing records are similar to those
produced for archival description records.
 
The chapters are published simultaneously in English and French.

des archivites du Quebec.
