Dear Rich[ard?] Boardman,
One should refer to 'Kartenmacher aller
Laender und Zeiten' by Wilhelm Bonacker (in addition to 'Tooley's
dictionary' and its 'Supplement'), published in Stuttgart by
Hiersemann in 1966, in that HE CITES HIS SOURCES. In the case of
"Kolb, Peter (1675-1726) aus Doerflas b[ei] Marktredwitz [...]"
Bonacker cites (in abbreviated form) page 460 of vol.16 of the
'Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie' (1875-1912). Since then there has
begun a 'Neue Deutsche Biographie' but this is not always so useful
(even though more recent) than the earlier work. You will find
further biographical references in 'How to identify a mapmaker' ed. by
Monique Pelletier (Tring, Hertfordshire: Map Collector Publications
for I.C.A., 1996). From memory (my copy is at home) I believe there is
another new source, acting as an index to previously-published
biographical works, that was not included in the ICA publication; I
can supply this information 'upon request' should you need it.
Yours sincerely
Francis Herbert (Curator of Maps, RGS, London)
