A local caver tells me that the name of the black man who first mapped a
portion of Mammoth Cave in 1843 was Stephen Bishop.
Information about Stephen Bishop is available in a variety of sources about
Mammoth Cave. One is DEPTHS OF THE EARTH - CAVES AND CAVERS OF THE UNITED
STATES by William R. Halliday (Harper & Row, 1966).
A web site, http://www.mammothcave.com/howformd.htm, indicates that Ed
Bishop, a great-nephew of Stephen Bishop, engaged in additional exploration
and mapping in 1908.
Hope this helps.
