It looks to me that that chart includes land and water though. You'd have to mask out ocean pixels from the *.src file (or some other way), then project the data to equal area.

There is a chart near the top of this page that lists the mean elevation
for 27 sections of the earth. Shouldn't be hard to figure out an
average/mean from there.
