The Ohio got its name from the call flatboaters made to each other (go ahead -
yell O--HI--O out the window - it really carries) People who lived along its
banks heard this call and thought the river was saying its name, so they have
referred to it as the Ohio ever since.
That's the same way people from Indiana are called Hoosiers. People called
out "Whoozh-dere" when trying to identify people in the woods ...
