Collection Statement for Spatial Data in Digital Form
MIL collects digital data using the same general
guidelines and area parameters as are applied to selecting
all other forms of spatial data; that is, the data must support
the curricula and research of the students and faculty of the
University of California, Santa Barbara.
There are some additional points to be considered in
the case of digital data:
1. By definition, digital data requires hardware and
software, which means that current capabilities must
be known and future plans concerning computer faiclities
(dictated by the needs of the students and faculty) must be in
place before decisions can be made on the selection of
digital data.
2. Only data that are fully documented and whose system
requirements are known will be collected.
3. Only data sets that represent synoptic or generic
data will be collected. Individual special-purpose datasets
will be reviewed and added to the collection only if they
support undergraduate or ongoing graduate curricula.
4. All digital-data storage formats will be considered if
they meet the above criteria.
