NSDI - Improving U.S. competitiveness
The U.S. has been the world leader in the development of
geographic information system software that has fueled the

help maintain this leadership role? Can NSDI increase the
competitiveness of U.S.-based companies? Leading software
vendors will discuss these questions.

The Federal Geographic Data Committee has been empowered
to lead the federal efforts of the NSDI through federal
policy documents such as OMB Circular A-16 and Presidential
Executive Order 12906. But the federal government is only
one player in the NSDI. How do we foster communication and
partnerships among existing institutions or create new ones
that allow all interests to participate and be represented
within the NSDI? Leaders of coordinating organizations
involved in the NSDI will address these issues.
Moderator: Nancy Tosta, Staff Director, Federal Geographic Data
Committee
Panelists: Michael Goodchild, Director, National Center for Geographic
Information and Analysis
David Schell, President, Open GIS Consortium

Information Council

Systems Association

1:30-5:00 SECTOR DISCUSSIONS
Each sector has unique opportunities and contributions to
make in the National Spatial Data Infrastructure. These
sessions have been organized to allow each sector to meet
and discuss the following questions from the perspectives of
attendees. How will the NSDI make a difference? Why is it
important to participate? What is the role of this sector
in building the NSDI and how does this sector best interact
with other sectors? What are the incentives and constraints
to partnerships? What is the time frame for NSDI? Where can
the sector find resources for NSDI?
Ideas, opinions, and action plans will be discussed in
the sector sessions. The discussions will be summarized and
presented at the NSDI Town Meeting on Wednesday morning.
Concurrent sessions for the following sectors have been
organized: Academic, Federal, Local, Private, Professional
Associations, State, and Utilities.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 10
8:30-12:00 NSDI Town Meeting
The diversity of organizations and interests potentially affected by a
robust NSDI is immense. Seldom do the leaders and key officers of these
interests have an opportunity to meet face to face to address the concerns
of all.
Directors, Committee members, and representatives of the many entities
that are working on various policy, coordination, and technical aspects of
the NSDI have been invited to participate in this discussion. The break-out
groups from Tuesday afternoon will report the results of their sector
discussions. Additionally, ideas and concerns from all attendees, collected
over the course of the Forum and through electronic communications prior
to the Forum, will be summarized and discussed. Finally, actions for the
future will be identified, along with agreement on who will take those
actions and within what time frames. The Town Meeting will lay the
foundation for the continued development of the NSDI over the next few years.
EXHIBITS
Government organizations, educational and non-profit organizations will
demonstrate geospatial data applications and products. Partnerships in the
application of geospatial data will be featured in these exhibits.
Exhibit Hours
Monday - 11:00-1:30 and 5:00-7:00;
