Russia loses control of earth-probing satellite

MOSCOW, Oct. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia's Federal Space Agency said
Wednesday it has lost control of an earth-probing satellite in what
appeared to be the second mishap this month for the country'sspace program.
The Monitor-E satellite was launched from the Plesetsk space center
in northern Russia on Aug. 26.
The satellite was designed to assess the aftermath of emergency
situations, map surface areas, survey agriculture and forestry
conditions. It can also be helpful in ecological monitoring, geological
cartography and the search for mineral resources. It can operate for
five years.
Earlier this month, a Russian rocket carrying an European satellite
crashed into the sea soon after liftoff. Enditem
