Friends:
I am trying to help a researcher who needs to locate L'Isle aux Sonnettes
or Rattlesnake Island in the Richelieu River, Quebec, and we seem to have
exhausted our own resources.
The researcher's reference is from Baroness Friederike von Riedesel's
LETTERS ANd JOURNAL RELATING TO THE WAR OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION . .(1867 ed.
of English translation from the German). Riedesel was traveling south in 1776
from Trois Rivieres to met her husband, General Friedrich von Riedesel. She
describes the party stopping for the night on an island where they could find
nothing but a deserted, half-finished house. This was L'Isle aux Sonnettes.
Next day "We crossed Lake Champlain and arrived in Fort John [Saint Jean]
at noon." This is confusing, because they would still be on the river, not
having reched the lake yet.
If anyone can help us find the island, we would both be most grateful.
Reidun
