Unfortunatly the first attempt did not work...this is the second :)
Four months ago I posted a message requesting information regarding
any servers (WWW, Gopher, FTP, Telnet etc.) that was of interest to
geographer and/or cartographer. I received information from many
users and I want to take this opportunity to thank them again. I
also promised that I would send back the fruit of my search to the
list.. and here it is. I did not have the chance to check all those
servers ...and some may already be out of services or changed
adress... but I think that you have here a pretty good list to start
surfing the net...and discover yourself many other interesting
sites.
I hope that this will help you all !!!
NB. (Sorry for the cross posting)

ASTRA, is a free European service through EARN for the
distribution of information. Databases organized are about
many different subjects. They can be classified as
chemistry, geology, informatics, pedagogic, historical etc
etc,
At the present time, the main goal of ASTRA is to insert
many new databases, to offer more information to the ASTRA
user community.
To access ASTRA SERVICE the user has to be connected to one
of the research networks. The requests to search the
available databases may be written through the ASTRA User
Interface, available for VM and VAX user and, in the future,
for the X.400 VM user, or using the ASTRA batch query
language.
Some help and some service are offered to the ASTRA user by
the ASTRA Working Group (ASTRA-WG) and in particular a list
has been defined for the user problems and suggestions. The
ASTRA service includes also the distribution of a bimensil
bullettin about the ASTRA news. This bullettin is sent to
every ASTRA user.
Users can access the service by sending the following
commands to ASTRADB at ICNUCEVM:
To get information about the service:
VM/CMS Users: TELL ASTRADB AT ICNUCEVM GET ASTRA INFO
VAX/VMS Users: SEND ASTRADB@ICNUCEVM GET ASTRA INFO
To get help about using the server:
VM/CMS Users: TELL ASTRADB AT ICNUCEVM HELP
VAX/VMS Users: SEND ASTRADB@ICNUCEVM HELP

following note)
It carries some discussions about volcano-related issues,
as well as the monthly Global Volcanism Network reports. The
latter
are published by a group of geologists at the Smithsonian; we
receive the reports a few weeks before they come out in print.
I also maintain a list of volcanologists called VLIST FILE.
VLIST contains names, e-mail addresses, research interests,
job titles, and fax numbers for a hundred or so volcanologists
and assorted fans.
If you would like to join volcano listserv, send me a brief note.
