The Cartographic Users Advisory Council (CUAC) met in Washington,
DC, on May 9-10, 1996. CUAC is a working group of
representatives from six organizations whose mission is to work
with map producing agencies and the Government Printing Office
for the inclusion of cartographic materials and data in the
depository program. The members organizations are: the American
Library Association Map and Geography Round Table (ALA/MAGERT);
the American Library Association Government Documents Roundtable
(ALA/GODORT); the Geoscience Information Society (GIS); the
Special Library Association Geography and Map Division (SLA/G&M);
the Western Association of Map Libraries (WAML); and the North
American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS).
Presentations and discussions with representatives of federal
agencies that produce or work with spatial data occupied most of
the two days. Agencies represented include: Library of Congress,
Map and Geography Division; U.S. Government Printing Office;
Defense Mapping Agency; Government Information Locator Service;
Federal Geographic Data Committee; U.S. Geological Survey; U.S.
Bureau of the Census; and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration.
CUAC members were concerned that newly announced guidelines for
public access work stations in Federal Depository Libraries were
unrealistic for the demands of electronic spatial data, While in
Washington, CUAC members prepared guidelines for the increased
hardware and software requirements necessary to utilize some of
the spatial data now being distributed through the Federal
Depository Library Program. CUAC's recommendations have been
published in Administrative Notes, the Federal Depository Library
Program's newsletter, as "Spatial Data Supplement to Recommended
Minimum Specifications for Public Access Work Stations in Federal
Depository Libraries." (Administrative Notes, v.17-#08-06/15/96,
p.14-15.
