Colleagues:
This was too good to keep to myself. I have just catalogued for the
British Library Map Library a map donated to the library. It was
published in 1965 by the Mjeteve Mesimore Kulture e Sportive "Hamid
Shijaku," which is the government mapping agency of Albania. The map
is called "Lufta civile ne Sh.B.A. 1861-1865" and shows military
movements and battle sites of the American Civil War. It's on two
sheets, and looks like it was meant to be joined and hung on a wall.
Among the important cities shown on the map (in Albanian, of course)
are (with their states, which I'll add in English):
Uashington (DC)
Luisvill (Kentucky)
Xheferson-Siti (Missouri)
De-Mojn (Iowa)
Roli (North Carolina)
Ollbani (New York)
Baton-Ruzh (Louisiana)
Apomatox (Virginia)
Hejnsvill (Florida)
Trenton (New Jersey){as a Jersey girl, I was glad to see that there
was nothing they could do to that name!}
It's fascinating to wonder why the Albanian government published
a map of the American Civil War to be used in its schools, and
interesting to note the map was published in the hundredth
anniversary year of the end of the war.
Just a little summer fun.
