1.1.2 Political Correctness and Name Changes
(from Phoenix Gazette 8/1/96 B10)
The Minnesota legislature passed a law in 1995 setting July 31, 1996, as a
deadline for the state commissioner of natural resources, in cooperation
with the counties, to select another name for 19 natural features which
used the specific "Squaw." Eight of the 10 counties cooperated in renaming
17 features.
Lake and Koochiching counties did not cooperate with the change: Lake
County suggested changing Squaw Creek and Squaw Bay to Politically Correct
Creek and Politically Correct Bay. The Department of Natural Resources
rejected these names, to which the Lake County Board replied it would
continue to use "Squaw."
The name of Squaw Lake (lake) was changed to Nature's Lake, while the town
of Squaw Lake will retain its name, since the law did not require towns to
change their name.
1.1.3 Albanian map of the US Civil War
The British Library Map Library received as a donation a map
published in 1965 by the Mjeteve Mesimore Kulture e Sportive "Hamid
Shijaku," which is the government mapping agency of Albania. The map
is called "Lufta civile ne Sh.B.A. 1861-1865" and shows military
movements and battle sites of the American Civil War. It's on two
sheets, and looks like it was meant to be joined and hung on a wall.
Among the important cities shown on the map (in Albanian, of course)
are (with their states, which I'll add in English):
Uashington (DC)
Luisvill (Kentucky)
Xheferson-Siti (Missouri)
De-Mojn (Iowa)
Roli (North Carolina)
Ollbani (New York)
Baton-Ruzh (Louisiana)
Apomatox (Virginia)
Hejnsvill (Florida)
Trenton (New Jersey)
It's fascinating to wonder why the Albanian government published
a map of the American Civil War to be used in its schools, and
interesting to note the map was published in the hundredth
anniversary year of the end of the war.
Thanks to April Carlucci for that interesting tidbit!
