Cemeteries are one class of features that the GNIS (Geographic Names
Information System) covers. This USGS database must be what Dr. Pierce
has heard of. You can search GNIS on cd-rom or on the Internet by
feature class so he could come up with a list of cemeteries for his
county I assume. I've been told by one of the people on our state
board for geographic names that he could contact Roger Payne of USGS
in Reston, Virginia to ascertain who is the contact person in New
York.

This is not really on our subject but I thought someone might be able to
forward the request to the right office.----------------Johnnie

I have been given information that there is a rural cemetery database
maintained by USGS. Could you send me information on that? As County
Historian for Ontario County, NY I would like to use such a database for our
planners, family history researchers, and for tourism information. Visits to
family history sites is popular here as a form of tourism. We get thousands
of out-of-state visitors for that purpose. I may be able to contribute to
that database also since we have 177 documented cemteries.
