----------------------------Original message----------------------------
Whilst baulking (as I did when the query was first publicized) at
doing research of this nature, when it ought to have been possible to
resolve it from Unesco sources, I am willing to contribute some
information to the residue of the original list.
Hungary, Holl[single acute diacritic]ok[double acute diacritic]o: mt
at 47 degrees 58 minutes N 18 53 E; populated place at 48 00 N 19 36 E
Romania, Biertan [NB: not Bietan]: populated place at 46 08 N 24 31 E
Romania, Horezu: monastery at 45 11 N 24 01 E
Algeria, Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad/Kalaa des Beni Hammad: mt at 35 49 N
4 47 E
The "Madara Rider" in Bulgaria cannot be found; the spelling (as with
"Bietan" in Romania) is suspect. Not having followed the progress of
this query, I must ask why Unesco itself cannot locate its own
cultural/heritage sites!
Yours, mystified (not for the first time)
Francis Herbert (Curator of Maps, RGS, London)
