Royal Geographical Society
-------------------------------------------
Applications for the 1998 Fellowships are invited from
anyone pursuing advanced research in the history of
cartography, irrespective of nationality, discipline or
profession. 'Advanced research' is taken to mean work
towards a doctorate, post-doctoral research, and work of an
equivalent level regardless of the applicant's formal
qualifications. Preference will be given to interpretative
studies in map history, irrespective of area, theme or
period.
The Harley Fellowships are prestigious as the only ones of
their kind in Europe. They aim to promote use of the great
wealth of cartographic material in London. Fellowships may
be awarded for up to four weeks at 250 pounds per week.
Nine Fellowships have been awarded in the past four years,
to a museum curator, a social scientist and doctoral
students and academics from departments of English, Fine
Arts and History. Winners to date have come from Belgium,
Canada, India, New Zealand, UK and USA.
