Hi Richard,
Not sure I qualify under your "sole responsibility" requirement, but I am
the GIS librarian at the University of Florida. Currently 90% of my time is
devoted to those efforts and the remaining 10% to typical faculty
requirements for public service librarians at UF. My background is in
Geomatics (surveying and mapping) and environmental consulting.
Hope this helps,
Joe

Richard,
Hmmm? I am still the curator of the map collection, but
my main focus is on the GIS Centre (the Assistant Curator
is becoming the de facto map librarian). I guess, if you
had to ask someone on campus they would call me the GIS "person".
I should mention that the Centre is a campus wide research
and service entity funded via the VP Academic and not the University
Libraries.
We did, however, make the case that the Centre should be housed in the
library
and not be attached to a faculty or department (obvious reasons :_)....
I guess all that makes this a GIS Librarian position as the expectation is
that my role will be focused on GIS, which is probably needed to (a) justify
funding and (b) make the Centre accountable for service and future funding.
did that help? or is it too much information :-)
cheers
james
ps... interesting question, as I haven't seen too many job ads
for librarians solely for GIS...most have been for combinations
like gov.docs, maps, data, etc.....I'd be interested to know
what your survey turns up...

Richard -
Would you believe three? We have a Geographic Information Coordinator
who directs our Harvard Geospatial Library; a Digital Cartography
Specialist who manages our small computer lab and consults with students
and faculty on GIS projects; and a GIS Instructor who works with classes
and other departments within the university to increase the awareness of
GIS technology, its potential to assist their research, and our services.
