I've been unable to resist mentioning a group of maps
showing 1980-1990 trends that we've added to the set of
census maps of Chicago at http://www.lib.uchicago.edu:80/
LibInfo/Libraries/Maps/chimaps.html. These maps bring out
some phenomena--such as the tremendous population _growth_
in certain "inner city" neighborhoods--that are not widely
known even locally (although analogous changes in New York,
Toronto, and San Francisco have been the object of a great
deal of scholarly comment). Maybe these phenomena not better
known because it's a lot of work to manipulate the Tiger
files and STF data so that you end up with comparable
boundaries and comparable data for two decades!
I realize it's in some ways a bit retrograde to put premade
maps up on the Web, but to judge by the traffic there seems
to be a market for them. Comments are as always welcome.
