Thanks to Phil Hoehn, UC Berkeley, for sharing the "CUMBERLAND" dating code
on Geographia, Ltd., maps. This British mapmaker has evidently had various
addresses over the years. (We have a 1960s map with their 114 Fleet St.
address, a 1970s map from 63 Fleet St., and a 1980s map with their Edinburgh
address.) Has Geographia moved around a lot...or do they have multiple
addresses?
Apparently, the Geographia Map Co., Inc., has no affiliation with Geographia,
Ltd. The former has (or had) a New York City address: 145 W 57 St. Neither
does it seem to have a code for dating its maps.
Curiously, Alexander Gross, F.R.G.S., who is connected to the Geographia Map
Co. (and not to Geographia, Ltd.) and whose name they freely use to add
stature to their maps, is also linked to the British publisher Geographers'
Map Co., Ltd., formerly (?) of 24-27 High Holburn St., London, and currently
(?) of Vestry Road, Sevenoaks, Kent. Evidently, Geographers' Map Co., Ltd.,
also has no connection with Geographia, Ltd., and its map dating system
remains a mystery.
Any expansion, correction or clarification of the above information would
certainly be welcome.
