Perhaps you are thinking of the "USGS Portfolio of One Hundred Maps;" a
set designed for teaching beginning geology or physical geography
students.
Sections of 50 of these maps were published, with annotations in
"Landforms and Topographic Maps: Illustrating Landforms of the
Continential United States." New York: John Wiley, 1970.
For cultural features you could look at "Atlas of Cultural Features."
Northbrook, Ill.: Hubbard Press, c1972.
