According to Webster's New Geographical Dictionary, West Bengal is:
State, NE India; 33,852 sq. m.; pop (1971p) 44,440,095; *Calcutta; ... "
A bunch of other stuff about chief cities, crops, coal, and the districts
that it encompasses.

"gisjim" has inquired about a country called "West Bengal".
There is no independent nation of West Bengal, but my understanding is that
the Indian or western part of the former state of Bengal can be so described,
especially to distinguish it from the eastern part, now Bangladesh.

Dear Don,
As one who lived and schooled in West Bengal for some eight years I will
venture to answer your query.
West Bengal got its name through the partitioning of India and Pakistan.
The latter was in two parts West and East. East Pakistan was in reality
East Bengal. Since 1971 east pakistan has become an independent country
and is named Bangladesh.
I attended a school in Darjeeling, home of the famous tea gardens and
private schools and holidayed in Calcutta. Calcutta was a major (still
is) trading centre and is the capital of West Bengal, a state within the
Indian federation. The word West does not appear on many maps and
atlases, although the Indian Government still employs the word.
All the bset,
Viv.
