Since you have now defined your interest in the colonial surveys, I would
recommend that you take a trip to some county courthouse with jurisdiction
over the land area of your research.  If you trace the property conveyances
all the way back, you may find exactly what you are looking for.  Since
Surveyor's have used boulders for over three thousand years as boundary
markers, you are likely to find references to them in the old metes and
bounds descriptions in the courthouse.
