Kathy,
From my days working in theater rigging systems, I can tell you
that WD-40 - though great for freeing and cleaning old parts - acts as a
dust magnet if left on metal parts. As messy as it is, grease is the best
thing for metal on metal. We have grease in many of the rollers in our map
cases here at UT. If applied carefully, and to the right places, the
danger of it getting on the maps is low. Now getting it all over your
hands when you remove a drawer in the future is almost a given - but it's
alot easier to wash hands than maps. You might also contact the company
that made your cases originaly and ask them for some advice. They might
have some pretty keen insight and suggestions. (We have the addresses
for most of the major map case producers in the U.S. if you need an
address or phone number). But whatever you do, please don't use WD-40 on
the rollers. ;-)
Hope this helps,
Eric
