Dear New York metro area Mapsters,
The Mercator Society, the donor group for the Map Division, N.Y.P.L.,
is hosting a program on Wednesday, June 7, 2000, from 5:30-7:30,
to which you are invited. We will be in the beautiful Trustees Room,
second floor of the Humanities & Social Sciences Library, The Research
Libraries, 5th Avenue and 42nd Street, Manhattan. We hope you can
join us there.
Please r.s.v.p. at 212-930-0654.
MAPPING BOSTON
Norman B. Leventhal, Mercator Society member and Bostonian
and
Professor Alex Krieger, Chair, Dept. of Urban Planning and Design,
Graduate School of Design, Harvard University
will be our speakers.
Collecting maps of New England and Boston for decades, Norman B.
Leventhal has not been content to file away his collection to savor
privately. Maps from his collection have been publicly displayed in
Boston over the years, and in 1999-2000, in two major exhbits at the
Boston Public Library and the New England Aquarium, in Boston. Linking
up with Professor Krieger and others [as David Cobb, Harvard Map
Collection] Mr. Leventhal's enthusiasm for the early maps of Boston
led this year to the production of the new book, Mapping Boston.
In this program at NYPL, we will hear about the collector and the
scholar's approaches to these magnificent materials as they relate to
the history of Boston.
A table display of Boston maps from the collections of The New York
Public Library Map Division will be available to complement the
program and for your viewing pleasure. The book, Mapping Boston, will
be available for purchase, and signing!, at the program.
