Though the story raised my eyebrows as well, I should point out that
what's being converted at UT is the "Undergraduate Library," which
had a very basic collection of fewer than 100,000 volumes that were
increasingly irrelevant to the way undergraduates needed to study.
Even when I was a grad student at UT in the early 80s, the UGL was
mostly a study center rather than a place to do research.
UT still has a serious library (Perry-Castaneda) a few hundred feet
away, plus the large research collections of the Harry Ransom Center.
