Dear Ms Albertina Monica Motlogi,
May I point you specifically towards the Map Curators' Group ('Groupe
des Cartothecaires') of LIBER [=Ligue des Bibliotheques Europeennes de
Recherche)? Although European in foundation and activities, LIBER's GdC
maintains a map librarianship education web-page - parts of which,
inevitably, are *universally* applicable. See:
http://www.maps.ethz.ch/mapcuratorship/gdc_liber/ (which is currently
updated to 17 July 2007!)
Sincerely,
(Mr) Francis Herbert (former Curator of Maps, RGS-IBG)

That is a very wide net you are casting. As a basic start, and given the
online environment, I would suggest looking at the following:
http://www.waml.org/ (Western Assoc. Map Libraries)
http://www.maps.ethz.ch/mapcuratorship/gdc_liber/gdc-education4
(tutorials and courses for map curators)
http://www.maphistory.info/topics.html#libs (links to areas
pertaining to map librarianship and curatorship)
http://doi.contentdirections.com/mr/greenwood.jsp?doi=10.1336/1563084740
(_Map Librarianship: An Introduction_, 3d ed.
by Mary Lynette Larsgaard)
http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/cts/olac/reviews/andrews.html
(a review of
_Maps and Related Cartographic Materials: Cataloging,
Classification, and Bibliographic Control _
edited by Paige G. Andrews and Mary Lynette Larsgaard)
I am sure others have their favorites. I would also call attention to
the just completed first session of the London Rare Book School's "A
History of Maps & Map Making":
