I think Sue Ann's pie illustration is good, and I'm going to use it. (I
would be sure to specify HUCKLEBERRY pie.) The only problem is that it
assumes a larger scale is necessarily a better scale.
I usually begin by asking them to think of a fraction: 1/4 is "larger"
than 1/400. If they didn't reject fractions in third grade, they can
usually grasp that.
