Subject: prototype NGMDB geographic search available, for comment
Hi -
Years ago, the NGMDB's Map Catalog search page included a map within
which you could specify a geographic area and conduct your search.
Its technology was very "1990's" and the base map was too simple to
be very useful; rather than attempt an upgrade, we had to abandon
this function in order to focus on more pressing issues. I'm pleased
to tell you that we're re-establishing this search function, and we'd
appreciate your advice and comments.
If you have a moment, please try it out, at
http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/ngmdb/ngm_compsearch_map.html . The geographic
search uses MapServer and KaMap. This is a PROTOTYPE, so I include
below a list of known issues and planned enhancements. After we
address the items on that list, and your comments, we'll make it
public.
This prototype developed very quickly this summer, as a team effort
involving David Percy, Rob Wardwell, Dennis McMacken, Alex Acosta,
Chuck Mayfield, and me. Please direct all comments to me, and I'll
pass them along to each. Thanks!
Dave

Known issues and planned enhancements:
- we will add selection button to enable view of AK, HI, or
Caribbean, instead of the default (conterminous U.S.)
- we will add a selection button to enable a Map Catalog search of
the centerpoint of the displayed area.
- this prototype version of the new Comprehensive Search page has a
few bugs which aren't in the official, public version of the
Comprehensive Search (the one without the geographic search). These
bugs will of course be corrected.
- when refreshing the search page, or when hitting the Back button
from the search-results page, we need to retain the area
last-displayed in the window.
- in this prototype, the link from the search results page to "refine
search" doesn't yet work.
