Subject: MARBI Proposals and Discussion Papers at ALA
Sender: [log in to unmask]

My apologies for getting these out so late, but here are the proposals and
discussion papers I think could be of interest to the cartographic community.

The first proposal of possible interest is Proposal 2001-04, which would make
the publisher, distribution (260) field repeatable. This would allow the
publication history of a title to be recorded in the same area of the record,
as opposed to having some in the 260 field and some in the note (500) field.
The first indicator would be defined to indicate the sequence of publishing
history.

Proposal 2001-05 covers changes needed in MARC21 to cover the new definition of
seriality. The changes will allow for the coding for continuing resources and
integrating resources in the MARC bibliographic format. I'm not sure in this
will have a direct impact on cartographic materials, but it's certainly
something to be aware of. This one is fairly complex and if you're interested,
I suggest you take a look at http://lcweb.loc.gov/marc/marbi/2001/2001-05.html

Other than that, there's a lot of stuff about the Holdings format (which if
you're interested in, let me know), there's a proposal on how to handle
non-MARC language codes in the 046 field, a proposal to add a field (887) to
allow the recording of information from other metadata schemes when the record
is being mapped to MARC, and some proposals for A/V material. If you've any
questions or comments, please get them to me by next Wednesday (13th).
