1. Presentation on Haitian Art and Culture
MFA Candidate, Rob Peterson
Thursday, January 14th from 5:30 to 6:30 PM
Lamar Dodd School of Art room S151

Rob Peterson will present his research on Haitian art and culture gathered during his 3 week
residency at the 1st Ghetto Biennale in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Rob says of his time there, "I got off
the plane and walked to the terminal as if I were in a dream that was not my own. The first thing
that I noticed was the quality of light, the second was the parade of smells. I realized that in my
haste to leave the United States that I had no money in my pocket and only a sliver of hope that
my prearranged ride would actually materialize. It did not."

2. ICE-Vision: Putney Swope (Robert Downey Sr., 1969)
Thursday, January 14 8 PM
Lamar Dodd School of Art Room S150

Film Studies major Will Stephenson continues ICE's informal weekly series, selecting a variety of
world cinema classics and subcultural curiosities.

"After several years working along the margins of the underground film scene in New York,
director Robert Downey Sr. broke through to wider recognition with the arthouse hit Putney
Swope, a wildly irreverent satire of race and advertising in America. Putney Swope (Arnold
Johnson) is the token African-American executive at an otherwise all-white advertising agency
when the chairman of the board unexpectedly drops dead. Through a fluke in the chain of
command, Swope becomes the new head of the firm, and decides its time to do things his way." -

4. Digital Media and Learning Competition

My name is David Mitchell. I am an ICE graduate research assistant and a DMA candidate in music
composition. I am interested in gaming composition and particularly the use of gaming as an
educational tool. There is a grant competition that has come to my attention that funds the
development of learning environments and digital media-based experiences for young people.

21st Century Learning Lab Designers is a grant competition sponsored by the MacArthur
Foundation in collaboration with Duke University, The University of California Humanities Research
Institute and Duke University's John Hope Franklin Center. This grant competition is a call for
proposals that provide "learning environments and digital media-based experiences that allow
young people to grapple with social challenges through activities based on the social nature,
contexts, and ideas of science, technology, engineering and math." Social networks, games, virtual
worlds, mobile devices or others digital media maybe used to create a learning environment for
young people.

As an ICE graduate assistant, I am in a position to help anyone who is interested in applying for
this grant. I can also help complete the grant writing process and assist with artistic, musical, and
programming resources as needed.

This is a potential $30,000 to $200,000 grant opportunity. Learn more at

The deadline for application is January 22nd. Contact: David Mitchell at [log in to unmask]
