Creativity and collaboration are fundamental to addressing today's socio-environmental challenges. This seminar will include arts-based, STEM-friendly activities developed by UGA researchers from the arts, humanities, and sciences designed to help students to think creatively, to collaborate across disciplines, and to work with people with different perspectives, knowledge, and values. It will be an engaging and fun way to enhance the creativity that you bring to your own graduate work and your capacity to effectively participate in collaborative teams.

1. Code the Universe: Visualizing Nature through Generative Art
Monday, January 8 at 4:30 PM
Friday, January 19 at 6:00 PM
https://engage.gsas.harvard.edu/event/9653886

What do fractals, flocks of birds, and figure skating have in common? Code the Universe is a practical beginner's guide to generative and algorithmic art with a focus on visualizing the beautiful natural and mathematical phenomena that makes up our everyday world. We'll start by getting acquainted with the field of generative art and tools of the trade, dive into discussions about beautiful natural phenomena, and do live-coding sessions visualizing everything from bouncing light rays to birds to the solar system. You'll leave Code the Universe with a few of your own pieces of generative art, and the tools you need to visualize whatever interests you most! All experience levels are welcome.

Instructor: Sudhan Chitgopkar is a Master's student in Harvard's Computational Science & Engineering Master's program. He has been exploring Generative Art and visualization for 3 years, and has given one of the most viewed TEDx talks on the subject. Sudhan's research at UGA was supported in part by the Arts Collaborative:

Masako Onodera Lecture
Tuesday, January 16 at 5:30 PM
Lamar Dodd School of Art

ATHICA is delighted to announce the Winter 2024 exhibition Onodera & Pearse: Contrasts and Correlations, featuring the work of two artists who share backgrounds in craft while embracing sculptural applications of metal, paper, gravity, and motion. Brought together in exhibition by curator Lauren Fancher, the two women were already known to each other through the craft community. Fancher states that "I have been a fan of fellow Athenian Mary Pearse's work as an artist, curator, and educator, and followed closely the development of her magnum opus, Full Bloom, harboring a secret aspiration for this intricate and epic sculpture of lead blossoms to be presented at ATHICA. After I encountered Masako Onodera and her delicate, mysterious, and grave work at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, I proposed that the three of us develop this exhibition, which positions Full Bloom beside pieces from Onodera's Vestiges and Phantoms series, among other works. Both of these masterful artists demonstrate an acute conceptual depth while using materials that align and echo with layers of meaning." Of particular import are their mutual use of non-traditional materials to both play homage to and critique the gilt and silver domestic accoutrements of women. Heavy is light and light is heavy in this thoughtful and subversive exhibition.
