Curiosity and the Creative Process as Self Care

This presentation will explore how crisis, curiosity and the creative process not only generates unexpected opportunities for discovery, but also informs artwork which fosters new connections between art and science. The presentation will also discuss how dyslexia, brain surgery and the pandemic continue to provide insight and inspiration in Kamen's as an artist.

How do artists and scientists work together?

Rebecca Kamen, sculptor and lecturer on the intersections of art and science, seeks 'the truth' through observation. Her artwork is informed by wide-ranging research into cosmology, history, philosophy, and by connecting common threads that flow across various scientific fields to capture and re-imagine what the scientists see.

Join Connie Frigo, a professor of saxophone and co-founder of the Athens Hip Hop Harmonic, a partnership between UGA and the local Hip Hop community. She is an organizer of interdisciplinary arts events with a focus on the creative process, social justice advocacy, and community engagement.

An information session about the 2024 "Wild Futures: Art, Culture, Impact" grant cycle, which awards grants of up to $50,000 per artist project, as well as advisory services, mentorship, and community-building opportunities. Come learn from your peers how to operate a sewing machine, including the various components, how to thread the machine, wind bobbins, and sew forwards and backwards.

Learn different stitches, speed control, and seam allowance in this intermediate skills sewing machine workshop. 
 
This sewing machine workshop is going to be TOTE-ally awesome

Make a canvas tote bag and learn about other Makerspace embroidery tools and supplies available to personalize it. 

Undergraduates Caroline Solomon and Casey Serrano will lead the workshops. Free and open to all UGA undergraduates. Limited to 10 participants. Supplies provided.

A public gathering with refreshments and conversation will introduce the UGA Humanities Festival in its first year. Everyone is welcome, and please share this invitation with your communities.

The Humanities Festival is a series of public events showcasing the richness and diversity of research and practice in the humanities at UGA and throughout our extended community. The festival will include talks, conversations, performances, screenings, and other events across campus and the Athens community, on topics from artificial intelligence to the American bald eagle and from the curation of a national collection of art to the legacies of 18th-century African-American poet Phillis Wheatley Peters.

The UGA Humanities Council is supported by the Office of Research, the Office of the Provost, and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, with the participation of more than 30 colleges, schools, departments, and units across the university.

vanessa german is a self-taught citizen artist working across sculpture, performance, communal rituals, immersive installation, and photography, in order to repair and reshape disrupted systems, spaces, and connections. The artist's practice proposes new models for social healing, utilizing creativity and tenderness as vital forces to reckon with the historical and ongoing catastrophes of structural racism, white supremacy, heteropatriarchy, resource extraction, and misogynoir.

13. ELEVATE: Minority Short Film Festival

UGA's Black Theatrical Ensemble is organizing a film festival dedicated to showcasing the filmmaking talent of minority filmmakers, to be held April 22-23.

We are specifically looking to highlight diversity with regards to race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, disabilities (acquired or developmental), and/or religion. While film crews are encouraged to be diverse and center minority experiences and visions, any and all students are welcome to be part of a production in any capacity.
