***Opportunity: Graduate Student Interdisciplinary Workshop and Research Study***

UGA Graduate students in environmental and social sciences, arts, and humanties programs are invited to take part in two workshops featuring interdisciplinary dialogue, collaboration, and creative activities during June 2017. Each participant will receive a $300 stipend and meals will be provided.

Participants must be full-time UGA graduate students and will be expected to take part in two 6-hour workshops during June and to provide feedback for use in evaluation.

This pilot program will explore the effectiveness of different workshop formats in developing creative capacity and interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance team research and complex problem-framing.

Finding solutions to today's wicked problems will demand both creativity and effective team research. It is clear from the literature that these skills can be effectively taught (DeHaan 2009, Salazar et al. 2012), yet their formal inclusion in graduate training is lacking. UGA is actively working to become a leader in innovative, interdisciplinary education and research, and this workshop series will pilot approaches with a view to contributing to further development of innovative approaches to graduate training.

If you are interested please reply to Mark Callahan, [log in to unmask] and provide your name, major, year of study, and availability during June 2017.

Supported by the Graduate School, Center for Integrative Conservation Research (CICR), and Ideas for Creative Exploration (ICE).

1. Hyphenated American: Diversity Enriches!
Friday, April 28 from 7 - 9:30 PM
Cine Lab, 234 W. Hancock Ave.
https://www.facebook.com/HA.DIVERSITY/

Hyphenated American is back this year with the theme: Diversity Enriches! Artists of a variety of cultures and backgrounds are coming together for a night of spoken word, new compositions, visual art and dance. Come on out for this free show and enjoy the beauty of diversity. We'll follow the show up with a safe discussion about the importance of diversity and what inclusivity looks like in our daily lives. Be on the lookout for news about the artists involved.

Featuring a performance by Persian composer Badie Khaleghian and a discussion moderated by
Dr. Dawn Bennett-Alexander, Associate Professor of Employment Law & Legal Studies, about diversity and inclusivity!

Last year's Hyphenated American project, supported by an Idea Lab Mini-Grant, was a great success featuring visual art, poetry, new music compositions, and guest lecturers who came together for a show focused on Latinos in the U.S. This April, Hyphenated American is returning with a broader focus to amplify the voices of immigrants, refugees, and hyphenated Americans of every culture.

Supported in part by the UGA Hispanic Student Association and Ideas for Creative Exploration.

3. ICE Reading Room: Centre for the Less Good Idea

"The South African artist William Kentridge has set up an arts foundation near his studio in Johannesburg, providing a 'safe space for uncertainty, doubt, stupidity and, at times, failure,' he says. The artist has called his foundation the Centre for the Less Good Idea - a reference to the process of creation, which often sees artists derailed from exploring their initial idea and focusing on 'secondary ideas that emerge during the process of making,' he says."

5. Fall Course Opportunity: Art and Nuclear Weapons

Critical Thinking
UNIV 1107 (CRN 35601)
TR 2-4:45 PM

6. Opportunity: A2RU Grants
Deadline: May 1
https://willson.uga.edu/willson-center-now-accepting-proposals-for-new-round-of-a2ru-grants/

The University of Georgia recently joined the Alliance for Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) - a partnership of more than 30 institutions committed to ensuring the greatest possible institutional support for interdisciplinary research, curricula, programs, and creative practice between the arts, sciences, and other disciplines. As one sign of this commitment, the Willson Center is supporting an a2ru Faculty Research Cluster, established in order to identify and support extraordinary arts-oriented research.

The a2ru Faculty Research Cluster is accepting proposals from full-time, research-budgeted faculty, whose projects have the potential to further UGA's reputation as a leader in arts-based research. Projects may be creative or scholarly in form, and they may be disciplinary or interdisciplinary in scope. Grants will range between 1,000-3,000 dollars and are intended to advance research projects with an eye toward external funding.

A one-page proposal describing the project and its significance should be sent, along with a one-page budget, to the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts at <[log in to unmask]>. Proposals should identify at least one possible external source of funding. Applications will be reviewed by a representative panel of faculty in the arts. Successful applicants will be required to submit at least one external grant proposal within a year of receiving funding. The Willson Center will provide assistance in proposal review and preparation.
