1. Ideas for Creative Exploration (ICE) is pleased to announce the awards from the 2008-2009 ICE
Grants call for proposals. The awards reflect a range of emerging interests in the arts at UGA,
including projects that experiment with technology, involve collaboration across disciplines, and
develop innovative methodological approaches.  ICE will support the new projects through various
stages of development with funding from the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR).

2. Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO)

2009 CURO Symposium presentation opportunity
Deadline: January 19, 2009

UGA undergraduates are invited to share creative work at the annual Center for Undergraduate
Opportunities (CURO) Symposium to be held April 6, 2009 at the Classic Center in dowtown
Athens. Research in the arts will be featured during afternoon presentations and an evening
reception. Presentation formats may include performance, visual art, readings, screenings, and
demonstrations.

Participants will be chosen based on a competitive selection process, students should have a 3.4
minimum GPA or be a part of a university-wide research program. Works may include, but are not
limited to art, dance, music, theatre, and creative writing. Interested students may contact Mark
Callahan, Artistic Director of Ideas for Creative Exploration (ICE), an interdisciplinary initiative for
advanced research in the arts at UGA.

The Call for Proposals for 2009 CURO Summer Research Fellowships is now available online:

The deadline for applications is ** February 13, 2009**. There is no application form. Proposals
require a cover letter, official transcript and a letter of support from the sponsoring faculty
member. The cover letter should include complete student contact information, expected benefits
to student’s undergraduate experience, and any other elements the applicant would like the
proposal reviewers to know. For examples of proposals that received funding for CURO 2008

3. Mandala: UGA's Multicultural Literary Journal
Sponsored by the Institute for African American Studies

COVER ART CONTEST and SUBMISSIONS in poetry, short stories, essays, and art.

This year's theme: Bridges

DEADLINE: January 15, 2009

Cover: Please submit 1 to 3 pieces of your best work. Grand Prize winner will receive $50.
All entries will be considered for publication and all submissions should be attached as a .jpg file.
Please label the subject line "Cover Art Contest" and include a cover letter with your submission.

Submissions: Please send up to 5 pages of poetry and up to 10 pages for short stories and essays.
All written submissions should be attached as a Word .doc; all art submissions should be attached
as a .jpg file. All submissions must include a cover letter. Please label genre of work (fiction, non-
fiction, poetry, or artwork) in the subject line.  Send a separate cover letter and submission per
genre.

6. Willson Center for Humanities and Arts
Research Fellowships
Deadline: January 22, 2009

This program supports University of Georgia faculty engaged in humanities research or artistic
creation or performance by providing release time (two courses) from teaching. Priority may be
given to applicants who have solicited external funding to support their research. Willson Center
Research Fellowships may be awarded to individuals only once every five years. Applications will
be judged in one of two categories: Tenured and Untenured.

7. NEH: Institutes for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities

This program is designed to bring together humanities scholars, advanced graduate students,
computer scientists, and others to learn new tools, approaches, and technologies and to foster
relationships for future collaborations in the humanities. These NEH grants support national or
regional (multistate) training programs for scholars and advanced graduate students to broaden
and extend their knowledge of digital humanities. NEH strongly encourages applicants to develop
proposals for multidisciplinary teams of collaborators that will offer the necessary range of
intellectual, technical, and practical expertise. Awards normally range from one to three years and
from $50,000 to a maximum of $250,000.
