1. Screening and Discussion: Black '47
Wednesday, January 23 at 8 PM
Cine, 234 W. Hancock Ave.
https://willson.uga.edu/event/screening-and-discussion-black-47/

The Willson Center presents a free public screening of director Lance Daly's 2018 Irish historical thriller. Shane Stephens, Consul General of Ireland in Atlanta, will introduce the film and Willson Center Director Nicholas Allen, Franklin Professor of English, will host a discussion and audience Q&A following the screening.

One man's ruthless pursuit of justice plays out against the darkest chapter of Irish history in this riveting revenge thriller. In 1847, battle-hardened soldier Feeney (James Frecheville) deserts the British army to return home to Ireland, where he finds his country ravaged beyond recognition by the Great Famine. When he discovers that his mother has died of starvation and his brother has been hanged by the British, something snaps, sending Feeney on a relentless quest to get even with the powers-that-be who have wronged both his family and his country. There is only one man who can stop Feeney's bloody crusade: disgraced British army veteran Hannah (Hugo Weaving), whose own loyalties may be more complex than they appear.

2. Screening and Discussion: Faraway Land
Wednesday, January 23 at 7:30 PM
Cine, 234 W. Hancock Ave.

Proceeds from this special presentation to benefit an art therapy program for refugees, organized by artist and UGA graduate Maria Nissan, who will lead a brief discussion and question and answer session following the screening.

Filmed in 2017 in Athens, Greece, this independent documentary film explores the inestimable phenomenon of friendship between refugees and volunteers. All of them come from different histories, they have different dramas, but also a lot in common: they all left their homeland behind to save their lives and to start again in this faraway land - sometimes hostile, sometimes supportive - which is Europe.

7. Call for Public Art - Hot Corner: An Athens Legacy
Deadline: January 27
https://www.accgov.com/8509/Call-for-Public-Art---Hot-Corner-Mural

The Athens Cultural Affairs Commission (ACAC) invites professional artists to submit a proposal and images of a mural concept for consideration in the Hot Corner: An Athens Legacy project in Athens. Georgia. The selected artist(s) will work with the ACAC and Athens-Clarke County government staff to create public art that enhances the project and complements the selected site.

In the heart of historic downtown Athens, Hot Corner is two blocks from the University of Georgia (UGA) campus. Surrounded by popular bars, restaurants, and music venues, the cultural, economic, and social history of this part of downtown Athens remains hidden in plain sight among a fairly transient population of students and young professionals. Yet the Morton Building and Hot Corner remain prominent symbols of minority entrepreneurship to the relatively small number of Athenians who understand its origins.

With the main goals of giving voice to the African American community and investing in creative place-making to foster pride in our shared history, the ACAC plans visual and storytelling workshops to complement the new mural. In partnership with the Lyndon House Arts Center (LHAC) and the Morton Theatre (now an active city-owned venue), we will engage the Athens and UGA communities in a timely discussion about the intersection of arts and history. At LHAC, we plan a workshop/lecture on visual storytelling led by the selected artist; at the Morton, we will host a community storytelling event featuring interviewees from the Hot Corner Oral History Project. Both events - and the mural's June 2019 unveiling - will coincide with the annual Hot Corner Festival, a celebration of Athens' African American-owned businesses past and present.

To immerse the selected artist ("Lead Artist") into the community, the local Artist Assistant will serve as an apprentice and Steering Committee liaison to the Lead Artist. The Artist Assistant will employ a small team of local artists (ages 16-24) to facilitate the mural's creation. Employing these young artists will help build a talent pipeline to assist with the future development of public art in our city.

The budget for this project is $24,000 all-inclusive. This means including, but not limited to, design, materials, installation, insurance, travel, and artists' fees.
