3. Opportunity: a2ru Emerging Creatives Student Summit
"Spectacle and the Collective Experience"
February 15-18
Louisiana State University
Application deadline: January 15
http://a2ruevents.wixsite.com/a2ruspectacle

Five spots available to UGA students (applications reviewed first-come, first-served). A limited number of travel grants are available here:
http://a2ruevents.wixsite.com/a2ruspectacle/register

Summit participants are eligible to apply for the a2ru Student Challenge project grant.

The Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) Emerging Creatives Student Summit brings together students who have an interest in the arts, crossing disciplinary boundaries, and developing collaborative projects. This year's theme, "Spectacle and the Collective Experience," will challenge students to broaden and interrogate their understanding of spectacle within the immediate context of Mardi Gras, as well as their own communities and the broader, disciplinary contexts of the arts and sciences.

Participating students will have the opportunity to explore the concept of spectacle through interdisciplinary project-based teams, as well as learn from distinguished Louisiana State professors. In addition to networking and a collaborative techniques workshop, this summit also includes a site visit to Louisiana's Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) with internationally renowned experimental physicist Dr. Gabriela Gonzalez. Students will also attend a panel on Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia" and will have an opportunity to see the production.

There is no registration fee, and students are encouraged to apply for travel grants to offset the cost of attending the conference. A group rate of $129/night for accommodations is available through January 18. Any student who receives a travel grant from a2ru is eligible for additional funds from the Willson Center a2ru research cluster and should contact Dr. Isabelle Loring Wallace for details, <[log in to unmask]>.

4. Athens 2nd Annual MLK Day Parade & Fest
Monday, January 15 at 3 PM
Downtown Athens

2018 Theme Message: "No More Remaining Silent"

United Group of Artists and Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM) will host the 2nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade and Festival. Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister and social activist, played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968.

King sought equality for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice through peaceful protest. Locally, the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement has been a vital force in promoting the philosophies and goals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Athens-Clarke County community, especially in equal justice, opportunity, and economic advancement for all persons.
