1. ICE-Vision: Igby Goes Down (Burr Steers, 2002)
Tuesday, October 15 at 5:30 PM
Lamar Dodd School of Art Room S150
http://www.facebook.com/groups/120740834290/

ICE-Vision continues with Film Studies and English major Dafna Kaufman's selections of great films
that may be forgotten by the general public, but can be remembered and cherished through
viewings today.

Often related to The Catcher in the Rye, Igby Goes Down tells the tale of rebellious and sarcastic
Igby Slocumb (Kieran Culkin). His antics and adventures are hilarious and witty, yet also genuinely
emotionally honest. Stephen Holden of The New York Times wrote that Igby Goes Down "lifts the
lid off the gleaming casserole of post-yuppie American culture." While overlooked in recent times,
the cast of Igby Goes Down is stacked with the best actors of our day, including Jeff Goldblum,
Claire Danes, Susan Sarandon, Bill Pullman, and Ryan Phillippe. This ensemble cast weaves a
scathingly funny and moving story of a young boy's struggle to grow up.

Next week: Rumble Fish (Coppola, 1983)

2. Screening: Pandora's Promise
Thursday, October 17 at 6:30 PM
Cine

This EcoFocus Film Series screening of the award-winning documentary will include a reception
and discussion.

An audience favorite at the Sundance Film Festival, "Pandora's Promise" asks whether the one
technology we fear most-nuclear-could save our planet from a climate catastrophe. One reviewer
writes: "Whatever your stance, [Robert] Stone's compelling film opens Pandora's box and promises
to change the conversation for years to come." This film screening and post-film discussion
provides a unique opportunity for an open conversation about the future of energy production in
Georgia.

This event is sponsored by EcoFocus Film Festival. EcoFocus was initiated by UGA's Odum School of
Ecology in 2007 and is presented by the Odum School, Willson Center for Humanities and Arts and
the UGA Office of Sustainability.

Free for the first 25 UGA students. $9.75; $7.50 for seniors and UGA students.

5. Lecture: Regis Fabre
Monday, October 21 at 5:30 PM
Lamar Dodd School of Art, Room S150

ATHICA with Lamar Dodd School of Art Galleries & CONTENT: an exhibition presents Regis Fabre, a
multimedia artist who lives and works in France. His art is the centerpiece of Content, an
international exhibition at ATHICA which runs through October 26th. The presentation is in French
with translation by Hamlin Jackson.

Images from the press, advertising slogans, various back of cigarette packs or claims, protests
injunctions constitute the material basis of the work of Regis Fabre. Taken out of context (events,
informative, advertising or political), these elements are then reworked "re-presented" revealing
the arbitrariness of meaning they claim, referring to the manipulation which they induce. The
images and words he chooses can be violent or of a disgusting character-the goal is not to offend
nor to ridicule, but to highlight the inherent absurdity within. The bias on the staging of
"highlighting" is radical. The irony employed in support of his works subverts any excess good
conscience, free from any emotional context. His work willingly assumes caustic, sometimes
brutal, themes to deny any authority to the stereotypes that others make for us.

6. Opportunity: 1708 Gallery Call for Proposals
Deadline: Thursday, October 31
https://fs2.formsite.com/1708gallery/form10/secure_index.html

1708 Gallery, a 35-year-old non-profit space for new art in Richmond, VA, seeks exhibition
proposals for its 2014-2015 season.

National and international artists and curators are encouraged to submit proposals to exhibit work
in all mediums (including, but not limited to: video and film, new media, installation, sculpture,
performance, painting and social practice). While proposals may include work made in the last
three years, 1708 Gallery strongly encourages proposals for new or developing projects and bodies
of work.

1708 Gallery's annual exhibition season runs from September through August and consists of up
to eight 6-week-long exhibitions featuring national and international emerging and established
artists, as well as expanded formats of art- and exhibition-making such as the Monster Drawing
Rally and the annual one-night, outdoor exhibition of light-based contemporary art, InLight
Richmond.

Guthman Musical Instrument Competition. An annual event to find the world's best new ideas in
musicality, design and engineering, Wired magazine has called the competition an "X-Prize for
music," and contestants have likened it to a TED Conference for new musical instrument designers.

* Young Guru, a Grammy-nominated audio engineer, DJ, and producer best known for his work
with Jay Z [http://www.djyoungguru.com/]

8. Opportunity: Tribeca Film Institute Documentary Fund
Deadline: November 5
https://tribecafilminstitute.org/programs/detail/tfi_documentary_fund

The Tribeca Film Institute Documentary Fund provides grants and guidance to exceptional
filmmakers with character-driven nonfiction works-in-progress that sit outside the social issue
landscape. By supporting work that engages in unexplored perspectives, the fund aims to help
take audiences into someone else's environment and spotlight the journey of the individual. Grants
of at least $10, 000 will be awarded in 2014.

In addition, the TFI/ESPN Prize will provide one annual grant of $30,000 for a feature-length
documentary work-in-progress (in development or production stage) that captures the human
element of the sports world -- and brings the dramatic stakes of competitiveness to vivid life.

All submissions must be feature-length documentaries with an intended length of at least seventy
minutes and should creatively document one or more unique characters. Submissions can be in the
advanced stages of development, production, or post-production but must not have aired on any
form of television, been screened publicly, or have been distributed in theaters or online prior to
February 2013. Submitted films must show enough footage to highlight character, unique access,
and storytelling ability.

Foreign language documentaries are eligible but must be subtitled and suitable for an American
audience.

The program is open to filmmakers anywhere in the world. Applicants must be 18 years of age or
older. Student films and documentary short films are not eligible.
