Please also welcome our new recipients of Graduate Assistantships in Interdisciplinary Arts Research:  Lucas Eytchison (Art) and Nkululeko Zungu (Music). These exceptional graduate students will develop creative research and collaborative work across disciplines with faculty, students, and community members.

What are the elements necessary to create a vibrant ecology of research where art and design inquiry may flourish alongside, within, and out of social and physical science research that is so deeply embedded within the fiber of research-oriented universities? In this special collection of Ground Works, the project work and commentaries explore vibrant ecologies of research, deepening our understanding of the institutional, social, and epistemological systems that effectively weave arts-based inquiry into the scholarly fabric of research.

3. Lecture: Kameelah Janan Rasheed

Visiting Artist, Kameelah Janan Rasheed will discuss her practice in conjunction with her exhibition "SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH OPERATOR" opening at the Athenaeum. Join us directly after the talk for an exhibition opening with refreshments and continued conversation. Rasheed's work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, the New Museum, MASS MoCA, and the 57th Venice Biennial. Rasheed is the author of three artist's books: An Alphabetical Accumulation of Approximate Observations (Endless Editions, 2019), No New Theories (Printed Matter, 2019), and the digital publication Scoring the Stacks (Brooklyn Public Library, 2021).

4. Creative Writing New Student Reading 2022

The Creative Writing Program is pleased to present its first in-person new student reading and welcome reception since 2019. Celebrate the work of six Ph.D. students: Nneoma Ike-Njuko and Sayantika Mandal, who matriculated in 2020; Maxime Bercalz, who matriculated in 2021; and the program's newest Ph.D. students, Ellen Boyette, D. T. Lumpkin, and Abhijit Sarmah. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the reading will start at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

5. Food, Philosophy and Art in the US and Mexico

Food, Philosophy and Art in the US and Mexico is a research project funded by the department of philosophy, the Office of Global Engagement, the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute, and the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts. For this two-day workshop, scholars from UGA, Mexico City and Madrid will speak about philosophical and anthropological issues related to the aesthetics of food.

South Arts, in partnership with Creative Placemaking Communities, is bringing the 2022 Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit: South & Appalachia to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Summit is designed to facilitate a network of artists, civic and cultural leaders, educators, public officials, and more from around the South to work in unison to build new and stronger partnerships, projects, programs, and policies. The experiences created at the summit will inform, inspire and empower the voices of those in the community.

7. a2ru 2022 National Conference: Exploring Artistic Research

The Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) national conference will take place from November 3-5, 2022, on the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus. This will be an in-person conference, though we anticipate remote attendance will be an option for many sessions.

The a2ru national conference is an opportunity for practitioners and researchers from across the higher education spectrum to share innovations and perspectives in the arts. a2ru advances the full range of arts and design integrative research, curricula, programs, and creative practice to acknowledge, articulate, and expand the vital role of higher education in our global society. a2ru's work, in partnership with an international network of leading higher education institutions, envisions a world in which universities -- students, faculty, and leaders -- explore, embed, and integrate the arts in everyday practice and research.

8. Willson Center for the Humanities and Arts Grants

Graduate Research Award
Deadline: September 9

The Willson Center Graduate Research Award provides support of up to $1,250 toward research and practice-related expenses for arts and humanities projects that are essential components of a graduate degree program. Applicants should explain the importance of their proposed activity and justify it within their field(s) of study in a context of research excellence. The Willson Center is particularly interested in fostering interdisciplinary research at the graduate level.

Distinguished Artist or Lecturer program
Deadline: September 9

The Willson Center Distinguished Artist or Lecturer program supports individual faculty or interdisciplinary groups in bringing leading thinkers and practitioners to campus in support of ongoing and innovative research projects. The program provides a $1,500 honorarium out of which the artist or lecturer pays his or her travel expenses. There are two deadlines for the Distinguished Artist or Lecturer program during the year. The August deadline is for the current academic year. The February deadline is for the following academic year. Distinguished artists and lecturers are nominated by the faculty and are selected by the Willson Center's Academic Advisory Board. Faculty are encouraged to conceive of this program as an opportunity to create broader impacts that include engagement with the student body, the public, the locality and state.

Arts Lab Faculty Fellowships
Deadline: September 30

Following the report of the UGA Task Force on Arts Research and Practice, an Arts Lab Cluster has been formed to support creativity across the university. As part of this, six Arts Lab Faculty Fellowships are available for faculty in the performing or creative arts for academic year 2023-2024. Funding for this round of Arts Lab Faculty Fellowships is provided by the Office of the Provost, and the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.

Arts Lab Faculty Fellowships are designed for faculty members in the performing or creative arts to develop practice, research and curriculum in the arts
Support comprises one course release, and support funds up to $2000. The course release portion of the award is a transfer to the Franklin College to support the unit's instructional replacement costs. Funds for arts instructional faculty who cannot commit to a semester away from instruction, but have need of a shorter period of study, practice, or research, can be considered by the selection committee.

The Torrance Center for Creativity and Talent Development at the UGA Mary Frances Early College of Education is looking for dynamic instructors to teach innovative classes for our Creative Explorers Camp. This program is for students in grades 8-10 and is an in-person summer camp hosted on the UGA main campus in Athens, Georgia.
