2. Reading Room: Oscillate wildly: the under-acknowledged prevalence, predictors, and outcomes of multi-disciplinary arts practice

By Alexandre Frenette, Nathan D. Martin, and Steven J. Tepper
Source: Cultural Trends
Link: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09548963.2018.1534709

"We propose that the practice of multiple artforms is a common, albeit under-acknowledged, component of nimbly navigating artistic labour markets, alongside other strategies such as multiple jobholding and self-employment. While there are undoubtedly benefits to specialization, overall, we find that generalist arts alumni are more likely to continue working in the arts well after graduation. Being a multi-disciplinary artist is significantly associated with a range of entrepreneurial career activities, such as self-employment or freelancing, teaching in the arts, or managing an arts-related organization."

6. Opportunity: UGA Innovation District Quick Pitch Competition
Wednesday, January 22 at 5:30 PM
Jackson Street Building, Room 130 (Critique Space)
https://www.eventbrite.com/o/uga-innovation-district-26765539381

A new event series designed to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity and collaboration.

Do you have an interesting business idea and want a chance to win $1,000? The University of Georgia Innovation District Seminar Series in January will feature a "Quick Pitch" competition, where 10 teams will pitch their business ideas in 90 seconds each for a chance to win up to $1,000. A panel of judges will select the winner, and the crowd will nominate a crowd favorite. The winning team will also receive an opportunity to pitch to a group of West Coast investors in February.

The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Jan. 15, and all ideas are welcome. You don't need to have an ongoing business, revenue, business plan, or product. Submit your idea here: http://www.ugaentr.com/quick-pitch.

The Innovation District Seminar Series is a new series designed to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity and collaboration, and to promote greater synergy among members of the university's research, innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems. This monthly forum will bring together faculty, staff, students and alumni, along with local entrepreneurs, community members, service providers and industry representatives, to discuss and strengthen UGA's culture of innovation.

The pitch competition will be followed by a networking reception with refreshments and delicious food. Parking is available in the North Campus Parking Deck. Registration through Eventbrite is requested. Many thanks to Hutchison PLLC for its generous support and event sponsorship.

8. Call for Submissions: a2ru Ground Works
Priority date for submissions is February 28, 2020
http://groundworks.io

The Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) issues a call for submissions to its online peer-reviewed collection of interdisciplinary arts projects, Ground Works.

We welcome submissions that integrate research and practice in the fine, performing, and applied arts and design with other disciplines. We seek a wide range of interdisciplinary works that pose a challenge to traditional peer review methods by inviting examination from multiple disciplinary perspectives. Eligible projects have achieved some initial recognition; they may be collaborative or sole-author, but should demonstrably advance multiple fields within and beyond the arts.
