1. Opportunity: Creature Comforts Artist-in-Residence

Creature Comforts Brewing Co. seeks an Athens-based visual artist for its next Artist-in-Residence (AiR). The AiR will work with Creature Comforts and local collaborators throughout the year to create artwork and develop a community-based creative project. Additionally, supported by residency funding, the AiR will engage with professional development resources throughout the year (books, courses, workshops.) The AiR will receive a $5,000 stipend for a commissioned work of art for Creature Comforts' permanent collection and to support their professional and creative development.

"Let's Go Clubbing- The Dynamics and Cognition of Crowded Dance Floors" 

Christian Kronsted is a competitive breakdancer with Stylin Out Crew (Chicago) and 5 Crew Dynasty (New York City). Christian has competed, taught, and performed internationally and has a Ph.D. in philosophy and cognitive science from the University of Memphis. When he is not hitting the dancefloor, Christian daylights as an academic working on issues in embodied cognition, group cognition, and the dynamics of crowd interaction. "Made Visible: Collecting and Curating Black Artists at the Georgia Museum of Art"

Shawnya L. Harris, Ph.D. is the Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Curator of African American and African Diasporic Art at the Georgia Museum of Art, where she has worked since 2015. Harris has curated numerous exhibitions including Mary Bendolph: Quilted Memories, Richard Hunt: Synthesis, and Expanding Tradition: Selections from the Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Collection, whose publication garnered the James A. Porter and David C. Driskell Book Award in African American art history in 2018. She is currently organizing a 2021 traveling retrospective and publication centering on the work of artist Emma Amos (1937-2020).

Zipporah Camille Thompson is a ceramist, weaver, sculptor, and activist based in Atlanta, Georgia -- land of the Muskogee. A native Carolinian, Thompson explores alchemical transformations through clay and textiles, examining marginalized bodies and eliciting social change through her work. Sculpted shapeshifters and hybrid landscapes investigate otherness. Thompson received her MFA from the University of Georgia and her BFA from North Carolina Charlotte. Her work has been featured in numerous publications and shown in spaces, nationally and internationally. Zipporah Camille Thompson is a 2021 MOCA GA Working Artist Project Fellow, a 2020 Artadia Atlanta Awardee, a Watershed Zenobia Scholarship Award grantee, an NCECA Multicultural Fellow, and an Idea Capital Travel Grant recipient. Thompson is represented by Whitespace Gallery in Atlanta, GA. She is a history addict, roller-skater, and lover of unicorns, zombies, the moon, tarot, and all things fantasy.

"Muslim Women and Comics" is a symposium sponsored by UGA's Diversity Research and Scholarship Grant program, and by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). It is presented as part of the Global Georgia Initiative public events series of the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.

The symposium's speakers are:

- Esra Mirze Santesso, associate professor of English, UGA (moderator)
- Ozge Samanci, associate professor of communication, Northwestern University; author of "Dare to Disappoint"
- Leila Abdelrazaq, author of "Baddawi"

Artists working in any/all media are invited to this free call for entries. Five selected artists will be offered a commission contract, specifications, and stipend of $750 on submission of commissioned work. Interested artists should submit a single PDF containing up to 10 images that are representative of their work in any media.

The 2022 Members' Showcase is a prime opportunity for all of these essential components of the arts in Athens.

9. Idea Lab Mini Grants

Idea Lab Mini Grants support creative interdisciplinary projects. Grant recipients are eligible to receive mentorship, feedback, and up to $500 in project funds. Collaborative teams may include participants from multiple communities and must include at least one student, faculty, or staff member from UGA. Proposals will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary selection committee in order of receipt, pending the availability of funds.
