Snailers,

This fall & winter I'm working with Ken & Janet Storey - 
http://www.kenstoreylab.com/ - on freeze tolerance in Cepaea nemoralis. 
The plan is to collect specimens for study after there are a few cm of 
frost in the soil, so we'll know that the ones analysed are fully 
prepared for winter. I've embedded a metre-square cage of window screens 
in garden soil, and will be loading this with snails to excavate so we 
can see how deeply each size/age class goes into the soil, but I also 
want to know when wild snails seen under cover objects go away, or 
don't, when it gets cold.

So my question is - are there studies, or is there experience, about how 
skittish snails are about having cover objects turned? I don't want 
snails to disappear from cover I'm checking because I was turning the 
cover too often, rather than because they felt it was time to dig in or 
go elsewhere to hibernate.

There probably isn't a study where marked snails were followed under an 
array of cover objects which were turned at a range of intervals, but 
I'd like to know what's known or suspected. I haven't googled the 
subject yet, so even key phrases to search on would be helpful.
