Dear subscribers

This is to inform you about the initiative to establish an International Sugar Cane Modelling Consortium. A major objective of the Consortium would be to promote exchange of ideas and sharing of information as well as costs, in a transparent and agreed manner towards the upgrading, maintenance and further development of an internationally validated DSSAT-compatible sugarcane model. As you might know, DSSAT Canegro is only available in the v 3.5 format.

An action plan and Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of the Consortium are currently being drafted. The plan is to organise a meeting back to back with the ISSCT Agronomy workshop in May 2006 in Thailand for finalising and approving these documents. This would also entail the official launching of the Consortium.

For further information please contact Rasack Nayamuth ([log in to unmask]).

This initiative was taken by a group of scientists who met during the International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists (ISSCT) Congress in Guatemala and constituted the "Ad Hoc Sugarcane Modelling Committee".
The Committee consists of R. Nayamuth (Chairman, Mauritius); J. Shine (Secretary, U.S.A.), A. Singels (South Africa), G. Kingston (Australia) and J. Torres (Colombia).
