Dear Members,

Regards and best wishes,

With a view to fine tune the available information regularly as also to
provide more accurate and reliable weather forecasts to un-educated farmers
for their agicultural purposes i started efforts to develop thumb rules a
couple of years ago.It is hyothesised by me that these rules may be of
immense use in their decision making at crop planning and operational level.

As a first step in this direction a field level extension problem was given
to a ph.D student as a part of his major work in addition to other
objectives.

I am successful to a large extent in finding the scientific reasons for the
Indegenous Knowledge(IK)of farmers on weather forecasting, collected from
several villages spread over a few thousands of kilometers on random sample
basis.

However, while trying to quantify the rainfall amount, intensity and duration
from the descriptions of the farmers told in their vernacular (local)
language and from some most dependable and revered "ALMANICS" by farmers i
am facing problems. For example certain words like----Good rains, intermittant
good rains, rains favourable for crops, average rain here and there
etc.,-----are the most common terminology that we got from both farmers as
also found in the Almanics. These words have been extremely difficult to
convert into mumbers with which we are finally interested to correlate with
the actual rain recorded by using scientific instruments by Government
Departments.

I shall be grateful to those members who are working on the above aspects
and interested to exchange the scientific information on these lines with
me.

Murthy.
