CROP SCIENCE MASTERS AND DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS AT UKZN, SOUTH
AFRICA

The Discipline of Crop Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal seeks
four (4) masters and two (2) Ph.D. students to participate in a research
programme on “Water use of drought tolerant food crops”. The
research programme will be funded by the Water Research Commission of
South Africa (WRC) from 2007 until 2013.

This is an opportunity to study drought tolerance under conditions
found in both KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, as the senior
researchers on this project include academic staff members of the Crop
Science Discipline at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), a senior
researcher in crop modelling at the South African Sugar Research
Institute, and a senior academic from the Department of Soil, Crop and
Climate Sciences at the University of The Free State. It is anticipated
that, initially, five students will be registered at the University of
KwaZulu-Natal and one student will be registered at the University of
the Free State. The students will be supervised by the senior
researchers from at least two of the mentioned centres.

The focus of the research will be on indigenous and/or underutilised
traditional crops. One of the primary objectives of the research and the
Crop Science Discipline at UKZN is to build research capacity in South
Africa. Hence, we are looking for qualified South Africans in the first
instance. Applications from candidates who are non-South Africans will
be considered if there are no suitably qualified South Africans.

Students who have completed a four-year degree in Crop Science or
related disciplines may apply for a M.Sc. Agric. Research Assistantship.
For a Ph.D. Research Assistantship, candidates are required to have
completed a M.Sc. Agric. or other relevant M.Sc. degree. Evidence of
publication record in peer-reviewed journals and background in plant
physiology and water relations will be advantageous for both M.Sc. and
Ph.D. applicants. We expect that one of the Ph.D. candidates will focus
on crop modelling for water use efficiency. Hence, for one of the Ph.D.
candidates we require evidence of crop modelling knowledge. At least one
Ph.D. student may study part time, but a decision on that option will be
discussed with successful candidates.

Assistantships will cover full tuition and a stipend, depending on the
seniority of a student. Research and dissemination expenses will be paid
from the project funds.

For further information on the project, please contact Prof. Albert T.
Modi on 033-260-5854/5515 or 0722074325 or by e-mail
([log in to unmask]). Send your applications with motivation,
detailed C.V. and list of referees by e-mail to Prof. Modi by the 15th
of July 2007.
