Job Summary:

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a
qualified candidate to serve as a Research Analyst for a two year,
fixed-term, exempt, renewable appointment for in the Environment and
Production Technology Division. This position is based at the IFPRI
headquarter located in Washington, D.C. and may involve significant
travel to collaborators' sites.

Essential Duties:

* Undertake literature review and communication with IFPRI staff and
collaborators on characterizing crop production systems in study
countries and synthesize findings as crop systems model input data
(e.g., soil, climate, management practices, variety characteristics)
* Execute crop growth simulations at country, regional, and global
scales, and post-process simulation output data (e.g., importing raw
model output data into GIS and relational database, summarizing output
variables using descriptive statistics, visualizing key output variables
in charts and maps) for subsequent interpretation and analysis by others
* Create, process, maintain, and manipulate large spatial datasets using
GIS software and convert to other formats as necessary
* Prepare and maintain documentation describing processes as they are
conceptualized and implemented
* Assist in the preparation of materials for presentations and reports

Required Qualifications:

* Master's degree or relevant experience in Agronomy, or relevant field
* Minimum of 2 years of post-Master's relevant work experience
* Sound understanding of agronomy, including soil science and plant
physiology
* Demonstrated experience in mathematical and process-based modeling of
cropping systems
* Proficiency in programming using Java
* Proficiency in managing large datasets using relational database
management system
* Fluency and strong writing skills in English
* Demonstrated willingness and ability to acquire new computational
skills and adapt to novel research techniques
* Demonstrated interpersonal skills and teamwork in a multicultural work
environment

Preferred qualifications:

* Experience and comfort with the Linux operating system, especially
shell scripting in bash
* Experience using the GRASS GIS environment for handling spatial data
and manipulating raster datasets for modeling purposes
* Proficiency in database management using MySQL or PostgreSQL
* Proficiency in programming using Fortran
* Proficiency with DSSAT, APSIM, EPIC, DNDC, CROPSYST or other popular
complex crop systems modeling software
* Familiar with international agricultural development-related research
topics
